What is our purpose? What are we all supposed to be doing with our lives? How do we figure this out? Do we even have a purpose or do we merely exist for the blink of an eye in the lifespan of the universe? What is the point to all of it?
I don’t think any of us will ever truly know the answers to these questions. Even those who whole-heartedly believe that they have a purpose, and have found it, don’t know for certain. But whether you believe that you have a higher purpose, or that you simply exist and, ultimately, it’s meaningless, I think we all want to do something with our lives. We are given a set amount of time on earth and we all have to figure out what we are going to do with that time, whether our actions have significance or not.
For some, we want to leave our mark, leave some sort of legacy so we will be remembered when we are gone. For some, we want to make a difference, to change the world in some way, be it politically, charitably, scientifically, artistically, whatever. For some, we want to leave something behind for our children, something to make the next generation better than the last, be it on a grand scale, or simply an inheritance for our own families. For some, we want to find happiness and a feeling of purpose in our own lives, even if it doesn’t leave anything lasting or memorable behind.
I think we need to find a balance, between giving back to the world, trying to leave it a better place than we found it, but also being a little bit selfish and enjoying our own lives. One person cannot change and perfect the entire world, but we should do what we can to improve it. And we should also remember that our time is limited, and in the end, you have to live your own life, so figure out what it is that will make you happy.
Because even if it is all meaningless, if there is no greater purpose, we need to make sure we do not waste our time. Yes, the world is messy and stupid and fucked up in a whole lot of ways. But there’s still beauty and wonder to be found in it, and there are still good people out there, and we can still do our best to fix our mistakes. Trying to understand your purpose, or what you want to do with your life, or however you perceive it; it’s difficult and scary, and some of us may never really figure out what we’re doing. Some of us just make it up as we go along. But if you are happy, and if you can give something back to help this world, then maybe that’s enough.
We can’t all bring about world peace, or stop starvation, or cure diseases. We can’t all be blissfully happy all the time. But we can try our best. Maybe you are that person who will change the world. We all have so much potential that we aren’t aware of. And we may never know why human life came into existence, or if there is any reason behind it. But we can appreciate what we have, appreciate the fact that we get to live and experience and feel, and make the absolute most of that. And whatever happens, happens. The universe is huge and incomprehensible, and we are mere specks within it. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t use every second of our lives to do something.
